Indeed, there are several things that suggest a high-end status – Core i7 processor, solid-state drive and Full HD display. On paper these things surely sound good, but how about when the laptop is further examined…?

This Lenovo Ideapad 510 (80SV0056US) enjoys from the latest generation of Intel processors – the seventh, dual-core Kaby Lake. The Core i7-7500U is a late 2016 release, bringing slightly better clock speeds (2.7 and 3.5GHz turbo) than the older i7-6500U (2.5GHz and 3.1GHz). The CPU Mark score is considerably better in the new model, 5300 vs 4300 points. Thus, a great processor performance can be expected on this Lenovo model.

A solid-state drive is always a nice thing to have, in this computer it’s a 256GB SSD. I don’t see any alarming reason to upgrade it, perhaps only if you want more space should you replace it with a 512GB model.

8GB DDR4 2133MHz memory is installed. The configuration is 4GB soldered on the mainboard, and another 4GB installed on a stick. By upgrading that stick to 8GB you can get 12GB total memory which is the maximum.

I can’t say this Lenovo works great for gaming due to integrated graphics, the Intel HD 620. But it’s not horrible either if you accept minimum settings and average FPS on newer games. Examples include GTA 5 on low settings getting 25-30 frames per second and Battlefield 4 around 40 frames on similar set-up.

A typical set of connections is offered by Lenovo Ideapad 510 (80SV0056US). At your disposal are one USB 2.0 and two USB 3.0 ports for your favorite peripherals. And for an external monitor there are two connectors to choose from: VGA and HDMI-out.

The panel type is IPS which traditionally means good viewing angles, however I noticed a comment saying the colors start to fade rather quickly when you move to sides. Please remember the maximum operating angle is around 180 degrees so it doesn’t flip to tablet mode. The top bezel hosts a webcam.

The battery is a slight disadvantage. It’s a 39Whr unit, giving just 3-4 hours web surfing on a single charge. Moreover, it’s integrated on the laptop, so you can only remove it by disassembling the notebook bottom.

Laptops like Lenovo Ideapad 510 (80SV0056US) are ideal for people who appreciate beautiful displays and high-end performance, and can more importantly put these features to good use. This would most likely include power users and artists working in digital field like images. Some things are less favorable, such as integrated battery with short operating time. If you can accept this shortcoming, the Lenovo makes a good companion for a demanding user!
